About: Legend goes that Longmu (the mother of dragons) was a generous Ms. Wen in the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C.－207 B.C.) who had the power to foresee fortune and misfortune and who was so nice and helpful that people call her “Goddess”. One day, when she was doing the laundry by the Xijiang River, she found a big egg from which five small animals hatched out. They caught fish for her and gradually grew into five dragons with horns and shell. Wen told them to create cloud and rain to protect the people. Wen was then called Longmu, the mother of dragons. When she died, the five dragons were so devastated that they turned into five well-learned men so as to bury her at the foot of Zhushan Mountain at the north bank. Later generations were touched by the filial piety shown by the five dragons, so they built the Xiaotong Temple to celebrate their moving filial piety. Generations of emperors, like the first emperor of Ming Dynasty (1368 A.D.－1644 A.D.), have conferred noble titles to Longmu. The imperial edict is also kept in the Temple. The current Longmu Temple was reconstructed from 1905 with brick, wood and stones. Here you can see stone wharves, stone memorial archways, the main hall, two side halls, imperial palace for short stays, grave of Longmu and stele pavilion. The exquisite architectural art of Longmu Ancestral Temple is mind blowing. Here you can see majestic and magnificent halls, stone carvings, brick carvings, wood carvings, lime carvings with fine craftsmanship and vivid murals. On the granite pillars on the gate and Xiangting Pavilion are carved dragons spiraling up the pillar. The dragon ball in the dragon’s mouth can roll but cannot be taken out. It is of top quality and design among pillars in the Qing Dynasty in South China. Longmu Temple has also survived all the bad weathers and other conditions for more than 100 years with its ingenious architectural design.
