Excerpt of Foreword by curator Kelvin Huang

Art had been seen as the mirror of the nature until the the European Enlightenment, and then considered as the mirror of the reality or the society afterwords. In our time equipped with the unprecedented “proximity technology”, we, in turn, are in need of the observation distance created and offered by art.

Wang Ling’s creation offers another dimension for a proper distance for observation. With “viewing” as the long-lasting cutting point, from “gazing” to “overlooking”, she manifests in various forms the complex relationships among technology, nature, humanity, and society. The viewers are invited to reconsider all the views through her photo-like images. Through the lens shaped by light and shadow and her brushes, we bring our own knowledge and experience, we face the nature and life with a simpler, and more authentic perspective, talking to the eternal, and the present. This exhibition includes three groups of Wang’s works, among which the use of overlapping, displacement, the virtual and reality are superimposed on one and another, gradually present the many visible and invisible in life.

When you are in the exhibition hall, you are brought along by Wang Ling’s brushes: in front of the windows, behind the curtains, in the shadows, or outside the light beams. The time passes through our eyes is the space, the history and the present, the reality and the illusion, the stars and the trees, the view outside the window and the window in mind. We view the world and life with the artist’s eyes, and at the same time, our inner self is mirrored and reflected in viewing and facing each other. This is our way of viewing the world, art, and self.
