Shenzhen Book City (Bao’an) will serve as the sub-venue for the 28th National Book Expo in July this year, when it will host an array of diversified cultural events.

Since its opening in 2015, Shenzhen Book City (Bao’an), located on Zhongxin Road in Xinqiao Subdistrict, has never eased up on innovating its business models to better cater to the needs of citizens.

With a focus on its positioning, which is centered around becoming a “family of laborers, heaven of makers, and paradise for popularizing science,” the 26,000-square meter complex houses a bookstore, training areas, retailers of creative cultural commodities, a gallery and a multi-functional exhibition space.

Zhou Xianping, a digital product businessman, said he used to buy books online, but since Bao’an Book City opened, his child asks to go to Book City every weekend, where he then has the opportunity to buy print books.

In 2017, the number of visitors to Book City reached 1 million. And up to now, Bao’an Book City has organized nearly 600 cultural events for public benefit.

The makerspace, one of the key innovations of Bao’an Book City, provides a service platform for the tech-inclined, acting as an office space, social venue, entertainment zone and an opportunity for venture capital investment. Up to now, it has gathered over 40 projects that cover listed companies, venture capital funds, State-level high tech firms and excellent makers.

Another special place housed in Bao’an Book City is the Shenzhen Laborers Literary Creation Incubator Bao’an branch. The incubator provides a platform for migrant workers to realize their dream of becoming a writer. At present, 13 migrant worker writers have joined the incubator. (Chen Xiaochun)
