Nine exhibitions you can’t miss in Guangzhou in March

Editor’s note: Every year when March arrives, Guangzhou is transformed into a vast sea of flowers, filled with different types of blossom. For those who love the great outdoors, enjoying spring flowers is a great choice; but for the less outdoorsy, the following nine exhibitions could be right up your street. From treasures and artworks from overseas to photography works, these exhibitions are a real cultural feast. Take your pick.


Guangdong Museum (广东省博物馆)

Mucha and others: Treasures of Art Nouveau

Period: Until Mar. 25, 2018

Venue: Hall No. 3, 3rd Floor, Guangdong Museum

Admission: One must purchase a ticket to visit this special exhibition, priced at RMB 30-50. Please refer to the ticket office for further details. 


Guangdong Museum presents a superb selection of works by Alphonse Mucha and other artists. These artworks were specially selected from the collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. This is the first time Mucha’s works have been exhibited in China. These artworks testify to the ideals, dreams and visions of the early 20th Century that molded the art and culture of modern Europe. 

Blue and White Porcelain: Science and Technology, Culture, Trade

Period: Dec. 8, 2017 - Apr. 07, 2018

Venue: Hall No. 2, 3rd Floor, Guangdong Museum

Admission: Free admission tickets can be obtained from the Ticket Office of Guangdong Museum from 8: 50 a.m. to 4 p.m. Valid ID is required for one person to get one ticket. Tickets are valid on the day of issue only.


A total of about 160 blue-and-white porcelain works are on display in this exhibition, along with photos, videos, experimental data and multimedia devices, showcasing technical, cultural and commercial achievements of blue-and-white porcelain. You can also learn from this exhibition about Guangdong’s role in overseas trade and cultural exchange via the porcelain export industry.

1st China Animation & Comic Art Exhibition

Period: Dec.15, 2017 - Apr. 26, 2018

Venue: Calligraphy and Painting Hall, 3rd Floor, Guangdong Museum

Admission: Free admission tickets can be obtained from the Ticket Office of Guangdong Museum from 8: 50 a.m. to 4 p.m. Valid ID is required for one person to get one ticket. Tickets are valid on the day of issue only.


At this exhibition, you can see most of the widely loved Chinese animations & comics, from classics like ‘Monkey King’, ‘Nezha Conquers the Dragon King’, ‘Lotus Lantern’, and ‘Old Master Q’, to currently hits such as ‘Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf’, ‘Grow Up With My Daughter’, ‘Mr. Box’, and ‘Life Smartphone’.

Swiss photographer Catherine Gfeller walked through cities with her camera in hand, snapping pictures of architecture and pedestrians in their surroundings and expressing Guangzhou through women’s vision. The point of view, the sensations, the thoughts of Guangzhou women will be the read thread of this project. 

Omer Fast’s first solo exhibition The Invisible Hand

Period: March 27 - May 27, 2018

In addition to showcasing a selection of acclaimed works by Omer Fast since 2011, the exhibition also marks the public debut of Omer Fast first VR film The Invisible Hand (2018), which is commissioned by Times Museum and produced in the city of Guangzhou.

Arx Lee was born in Zhongshan, Guangdong and graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2002. He now works and lives in Guangzhou. Jean-François Roudillon, founder of LOFT Gallery in Paris said, “In front of Arx’s works, we feel that he is just a tool of his own imagination, and his imagination controls his hands to paint everything on the canvas, and interprets a completely different universal visual vocabulary through his paintbrush waving, almost magic.”

MUSE: Zhang Haier——How one photographer has spent thirty years seeking enlightenment through a dark lens

Zhang Haier is a well-known figure in photography in China, recognized for a steadfast devotion to style and content which has evolved through a thirty-year career that began in the mid-1980s. Now, the exhibition “MUSE” brings together familiar and previously unseen examples of work that spans Zhang Haier’s career. The selection begins from his primary sources of inspiration – women, yes, but family members initially not strangers – and is focused on the major themes that emerged.

2018 marks the 120th birthday of Xu Guangping, partner, assistant and former student of Lu Xun (1881-1936), one of China’s greatest writers. Born in Guangzhou’s Panyu District, Xu Guangping was a brave, independent and progressive female writer in Chinese modern and contemporary history. The exhibition tells Xu’s rebellious childhood, her love story and marriage with Lu Xun, and her personal growth. Precious exhibits are shown, including correspondence between Lu Xun and Xu Guangping, rarely known photos of their family life and daily use articles in last century.
