Comédie Française will bring the original French comedy The Miser (L' Avare) to Guangzhou on July 8 and 9. The Miser by Molière has been performed more than 2000 times by Comédie Française since 1680. But as with many major works, it serves as a rereading of topical events.

The miser of the title is called Harpagon who is obsessed with the wealth he has amassed and always ready to save expenses. Harpagon lends money for interest and his son borrows loans; his son falls in love with a poor girl who is coincidentally Harpagon's lady of his love. In order to acquire wealth, he marries his daughter to a wealthy man of his choosing regardless of her feeling. He trades his daughter’s and son’s marriages for recovering the lost money, which happens to contribute to their happy marriages.

Comédie Française was established in October 1969 by then secretary-general of France’s Ministry of Culture. It is the youngest and one of the members of France’s National Drama Centre.

For the first time as repertoire writer and with a very contemporary approach, director Ludovic Lagarde (head of the National Drama Centre, La Comedie de Reims) tackles one of today’s burning topics: money and greed. He gives to this great classic a new energy and highlights how this social and psychological satire is terribly contemporary. As scary as it is funny, the comedian creates an unheard-of ambiance somewhere between euphoria and discomfort.
