Futian, an ideal place for investment

As Shenzhen’s central district, Futian is the city’s administrative, cultural, financial, information and business center

Futian District, Shenzhen’s central district, is the city’s administrative, cultural, financial, information and business center. It has 1.50 million permanent residents, 953,500 of whom have a Shenzhen hukou. In 2016, the added value of the district’s cultural industry reached 31.28 billion yuan (US$4.53 billion), a year-on-year increase of 8.7 percent and accounting for 8.8 percent of the district’s regional gross domestic product (GDP). Futian’s creative design industry accounts for more than 70 percent of the output of the district’s cultural industry, with advantages mainly focusing on fields such as architectural design, fashion industry and industrial design. Of the city’s top 100 cultural and creative enterprises, 25 of them are in Futian. Of the 12 recognized cultural and creative industrial parks, two are national level and four are municipal level.

Geographic location

Located in the center of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and bordering Hong Kong to the south, the 78.66-square-kilometer Futian District is where the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC and the Shenzhen Municipal Government are located as well as the central business district. Huanggang and Futian checkpoints see a daily passenger throughput of up to 500,000. Huanggang Checkpoint is Asia’s largest checkpoint and China’s only land checkpoint that is open 24 hours a day. After the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rail line is put into use, it will only take 15 minutes to travel from Futian Station to Central in Hong Kong.

Futian District is a transport hub of Shenzhen. Three trunk roads — Shennan, Binhe and Beihuan boulevards — pass through the district, forming a road network of “five horizontal roads and nine vertical roads.” Residents can find a bus station within 500 meters of their home. Sixty-one stations on seven Metro lines are in Futian. Chegongmiao Station is the city’s largest interchange Metro station and Futian Station is Asia’s largest underground high-speed railway station, with trains running at the fastest speed in the world. It takes 30 minutes to drive from Futian to Yantian Port in eastern Shenzhen, Shekou Port in western Shenzhen and Shenzhen International Airport, while it takes about 33 minutes to take a train on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rail line to reach Guangzhou, forming a “30-minute commuting circle reaching Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.”

Economic industry

Futian District realized 356.14 billion yuan in regional GDP in 2016, an increase of 8.6 percent over the previous year and nearly equivalent to the economic volume of a medium-sized city in China. Last year, the district also recorded 30 billion yuan in fixed assets investment, a year-on-year increase of 27.5 percent; 166.512 billion yuan in total retail sales of consumer goods, up 8.1 percent; US$118.6 billion in foreign trade, of which US$52.7 billion was for exports. The district’s tax revenue reached 115.27 billion yuan last year, a growth of 3.8 percent year on year. The added value of the tertiary industry accounted for 93.72 percent of the regional GDP, with the added value of the modern service industry reaching 228.66 billion yuan, an increase of 10.5 percent and accounting for 64.2 percent of the regional GDP.

China Merchants Bank, Ping An Group, Amer International Group and other Fortune 500 enterprises based in Shenzhen are setting roots in Futian, which has seen the congregation of 70 percent of the city’s licensed financial headquarters, more than 50 percent of the city’s venture capital companies, 70 percent of the headquarters of logistics companies and 60 percent of the headquarters of security companies. Over the years, the district has nurtured 120 publicly listed enterprises, becoming an incubator for quality enterprises. At present, up to 85 Fortune 500 enterprises and their branches have settled in Futian, accounting for one-third of the city’s total. Sixteen enterprises in Futian District have been listed among China’s top 500 enterprises, accounting for 50 percent of the city’s total.

Design is the soul of innovation in enterprises. As a district of design, Futian boasts six of the country’s top 10 women’s clothing brands and is home to the design bases of a number of leading companies in fields such as architecture, landscaping, clothing and advertising. Futian has also attracted many research institutes and top law firms.

People’s livelihood

There are 92 primary and middle schools and 151 kindergartens in Futian. Three of the city’s top 4 public schools are in the district. The district also has 723 medical institutions, including 12 hospitals, 72 community clinics and one disease control and prevention center. Five of the city’s top hospitals are in Futian. There are 18,407 medical workers and 9,062 hospital beds in the district, treating more than 20 million patients every year.

The district is also home to a large number of cultural facilities including 1,524 stadiums and gymnasiums, 109 public libraries, eight cultural centers, and two museums. There are 1,048 cultural groups in Futian, and more than 5,200 cultural activities for the public good are organized every year.

Policy support

Futian has given policy support to cultural industries including creative design, animated games, new media, digital publication, movies and television, cultural tourism, development of intangible cultural heritage, high-end printing and fashion. It has also implemented special policies for the development of the architectural decoration industry, focusing on architectural design, decorative design, soft outfit design, landscaping design and lighting design, among others.

The district has established a mechanism to provide one-on-one tailor-made services to 110 major cultural enterprises, aiming at strengthening guidance and personalized nurturing.

During the 13th Five-year Plan period (2016-2020), Futian plans to spend 1 billion yuan to attract high-end talents. Talents in the district will be granted special treatment regarding their children’s schooling, health care, cultural and sports services and government services.(SD News)
