The State Council issued a five year plan to develop China's modern transportation network on Feb 28.
The central government's plan will see two coastal transport corridors built across Zhanjiang as part of the government's initiative to build 10 horizontal and 10 vertical transport corridors interconnecting East and West China, and North and South China by 2020. The first corridor will stretch from Tongjiang in Heilongjiang province and end in Sanya, traversing Tianjin, Nantong and Zhanjiang. The second corridor will connect Zhanjiang with Erenhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region crossing through Datong, Luoyang and Yichang.
As a strategic pivot city of the Belt and Road Initiative, required transportation network improvements and distribution hub functions are imperative for the coastal Guangdong city.
"Zhanjiang enjoys a favorable geographic position and boasts abundant resources, which will benefit such a good development opportunity," said Yan Yuke, a professor of industrial economics at Guangdong Ocean University.
