Hisaishi movie scores

Chinese violinists Xiao Nan and Shi Yimei will hold a concert of movie scores composed by Joe Hisaishi this weekend.

Hisaishi is a Japanese composer and musical director known for over 100 film scores and solo albums dating back to 1981. He has been associated with animator Hayao Miyazaki since 1984, having composed scores for all his films save “The Castle of Cagliostro.” He is also recognized for the soundtracks he has provided for filmmaker Takeshi Kitano, including “A Scene at the Sea” (1991), “Sonatine” (1993), “Kids Return” (1996), “Hana-bi” (1997), “Kikujiro” (1999) and “Dolls” (2002), as well for the video game series “Ni no Kuni.”

National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine

Another New Year concert by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine will be staged Jan. 6. Nicola Giuliani will weil the baton.

Folk duo hits

Phoenix Legend, one of China’s hottest pop music bands, will collaborate with Tauride Symphony Orchestra from Russia to present a night of their greatest hits Jan. 7 at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center.

Founded in 1998, the duo — rapper Zeng Yi and singer Yangwei Linghua — rose to fame with their songs blending indigenous folk melodies with rap and dance beats.

During their Shenzhen show, the duo will work with the 220-year-old Tauride Symphony Orchestra from St. Petersburg under the baton of conductor Mikhail Golikov, remixing some of their popular hits.

Replica of murals

Reproduced images of murals from the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang in Gansu Province are on display at Shenzhen University.

The murals in the caves date from the 5th to the 14th century. They are valued for the scale and richness of content as well as their artistry. Buddhist subjects are most common.

Luo Zhongli

Luo Zhongli, a significant Chinese artist in both modern and contemporary art from Sichuan Province, is exhibiting his oil paintings and sculptures at the “Partita in Bashan” exhibition.

Photographic works, installations, videos and sculptures created by contemporary Chinese artist Jiang Zhi are on display at his “All” exhibition. His photography series “Elegy” and “Love Letters” show the powerful sensory experience of light and fire.

Images of Chaoshan

More than 600 rarely seen images and an hour-long video of life in Chaozhou and Shantou in the early 20th century are on display. Researchers believe the video was shot in 1921-1939. The video shows signature Chaoshan-style architecture, clothes and accessories, cuisines and daily activities, extremely valuable for their research.
