Chinese pianist Li Yundi will collaborate with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America for a concert July 23. Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit will wield the baton.

The program will be Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 5” and Berlioz’s "Fantastical Symphony."

Li is most well-known for being the youngest pianist to win the International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in 2000 at the age of 18. In 1994, he entered Shenzhen Arts School and later studied at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media in Germany.

In 1995, he was awarded first place at the Stravinsky International Youth Competition. In 1998, he won the 1998 Missouri Southern International Piano Competition (Junior Division). The next year, he took third prize at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition of Utrecht, the Netherlands. He also won first place at the Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Piano Competition.

Dutoit is particularly noted for his interpretations of 20th-century French and Russian music. He has made influential modern recordings of Hector Berlioz’s “Roméo et Juliette” and Maurice Ravel’s ballets “Daphnis et Chloé” and “Ma mère l’oye.” He currently serves as the principal conductor and artistic director of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America is an American youth orchestra organized by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute. It was established in 2012.

Berlioz’s “Fantastical Symphony” is an important piece from the early Romantic period and is popular with concert audiences worldwide because of its hallucinatory and dreamlike nature and because history suggests Berlioz composed at least a portion of it under the influence of opium.
