Architecture and design of Le Corbusier
Date: June 14–July 31, 2015
Venue: Shenzhen OCT Art & Design Gallery
Organizer: Aube Conception
Born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, (1887-1965), Le Corbusier was endowed with wide-ranging gifts, allowing him to become a visual artist, writer, architect, designer, and city planner. He was all of these things, all at the same time.
As the originator behind a rich creative corpus of about one hundred buildings and a town, more than 400 paintings, 80 books and magazines, and over a hundred pieces of furniture, he became one of the creative giants of the 20th century.
He quickly pulled ahead of the artistic and intellectual scene, initially that of Paris, but then the European scene, finally achieving world renown by becoming the first architect of the 20th century to build on all four continents: Europe, Africa, South and North Americas and Asia.
He produced a theoretical work and when he built, it was a process that would both provoke and innovate in equal measures, ensuring he was as much admired as he was scorned. He is simultaneously perceived to be both the hero of a modernity that grew up alongside the progress of mankind, but also a destroyer of the past.
This exhibition offers a journey through the sixty years he spent creating his oeuvre in an attempt to discover some of the most emblematic buildings, his finest works, and part of the theories of this man who would tirelessly redraw a more beautiful world and a better world.
