The exhibition “Face of God: The Rare Masks from Central Africa” was launched in Guangdong Museum on April 29. More than 100 masks and boutique musical instruments from Central Africa are being exhibited in the museum. Some rare treasures have never been displayed publicly before.
Mask has a very long history in Africa. Behind the masks are the mysterious customs and culture. African people create different kinds of masks about mysterious religious activities. Those include ceremony of praying for rain, weddings and funerals, sowing seeds and harvest, coming-of-age ceremony, witchcraft, etc.
The exhibition opens to the public for free and will last until July 24 at the third floor exhibition hall of Guangdong Museum.
