Why should these young artists from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts named this group exhibition “Spring”. About the English meaning of spring, one is “the season of growth”, one is “a natural flow of ground water”. From my point of view, on one hand, they show their full expectation to the exhibition, on the other hand, they hope everything is naturally appeared and revealed. About the reason for the name why they didn’t select Chinese spring, is that they didn’t hope to have the relation with these great words, such as “the birth of life, all things recovery, thriving” and so on, they just pick the simple meaning spring, they treat themselves as the common manual laborer dealing with mud, fire, and glaze, using work as their basic means of self-thinking and practicing.
Japanese potter Zhong Cun Jin Ping proposed a very interesting concept, he takes the pottery as a example of a track and field competition, lagging a circle behind and running with the first one shoulder by shoulder. It is just the state that contemporary art ceramics using traditional media. How can we chase the first one: “maybe one can use a theoretical or philosophical way to approach creative process, and it may bring more strength to one’s works”. Perhaps this is also an outdated concept.
It is a mistake to compare the pottery with the contemporary art. Actually, for potters, pottery was their present expression of emotion and mood.Thus, they never lose at the starting line. Mud is the essence of life, also is the most contemporary issue. Ceramic is the material that comes most close to the essence of life, life is always a proposition.The characteristics of ceramic technology is the difference that they have to differ from other artists, this kind of ability is not an identity label, but the ability itself is the premise to create different characteristics, personality, style and type of work.
The selected works to participate in the exhibition is only one type of their classes: life utensil can not present their works’ all face, and they also take the great proposition “life is the essence of pottery” into action. In fact, life utensils is the one contact most with hand, and always present before our eyes, the objects used in daily life is the most important part of life aesthetics. Although it is not as direct as architecture, painting, sculpture giving people huge visual impact, but they are good enough to play “moisten things silently” role in daily use, and strike our mind and soul. They try to use their manual labor, conveying elegant, calm, peaceful temperament to the audience, perhaps this is right their purpose.
