Long Drum Dance
Yao People perform Long Drum Dance in festivals. With a red ribbon wrapped around the waist and white cloth wrapping legs, the dancers hang the more than 1 meter long drum in the front of their body. The whole set of dance is powerful and rough which shows the bravery and strength of ethnic Yao.
Kai Chang Festival (Start Singing Festival)
According to the traditional custom, Yao people are not allowed to singing and courting between the second day of the second month to the seventh day of the seventh month of Chinese lunar calendar. If they do, they would be condemned by the community. On the seventh day of the seventh month of Chinese lunar calendar, people can start to sing again. Therefore, this day is referred to as Kai Chang Festival (Start Singing Festival) by ethnic Yao.
Yao people have intriguing marriage customs. With antiphonal singing as a major means of courting, youngsters choose lovers by themselves and get married with the consent of the parents on both sides. They still keep the custom of “Man married to the woman” and that “kids should follow their mother”. On the wedding day, the groom should walk to the bride’s home. Relatives and friends of the couple will participate the wedding at the bride’s home.
